Privacy and tips policy
This site is operated by an anonymous moderator in South Africa. It publishes only information already in the public domain, drawn from news reports and government statements, and it collects personal information only through the tip form.
Tips
- Purpose. Tips are collected to support the investigation of the Ekurhuleni killings and, where relevant, to be passed to the South African Police Service. This is the sole purpose for which they are processed (POPIA section 13).
- What is stored. Your message, the case it relates to if you gave one, and your contact details if you chose to give them. All three are encrypted at rest. Your IP address is not stored; a salted, day-scoped hash is kept to limit abuse, cleared within two days, and cannot be reversed to identify you.
- Who sees it. Only the anonymous moderator and vetted collaborators with an account on this site. Accounts require two-factor authentication.
- Retention. Tips are deleted automatically after 365 days, whatever their status.
- Your rights. You may ask for deletion at any time on the tip deletion page by quoting the reference shown after you submitted. A tip that has not yet been passed to the police is deleted at once; one that has been is flagged and removed when the investigation no longer needs it. Tips without a reference cannot be located and therefore cannot be retrieved.
Volunteer applications
- Purpose. Details given on the Get involved form (name, email, cell number, the help you offer and your note) are used only to decide whether to give you an account on this site.
- Who sees it. Admins only. Approved volunteers keep their name and email as account details; the note and cell number stay visible to admins.
- Retention. Applications that are not completed or are declined are deleted automatically after 90 days. You can ask for deletion sooner by replying to any email from us, or by writing to hello@kempton.watch.

Corrections
If you believe a published fact is wrong, the victims page shows which outlet it rests on; corrections are made when the source corrects or an official statement contradicts it.
